Scholarship Opportunity

FJS Consulting Pte Ltd,a financial and business consulting firm registered in the Maldives, is looking for 2 potential candidates to follow ACCA courses in the Maldives.

The Scholarship will cover fees and course fees of the ACCA course, in addition a part-time position for Accounts Assistant at FJS will be offered to the candidate.

Potential candidates should be able to demonstrate their commitment to studies and should have completed GCE O/L Mathematics and English and GCE A/L with minimum 2 passes.

Accounts Assistant will be members of the Consulting Team of FJS. The main responsibilities of AAs are assisting in accounts management, financial audits, management audits, and other risk based assessments. Candidates will spend majority of their time working under qualified chartered accountants with different clients. Allowances will be based on level of education and prior experience of the candidate.

CPSC conducts ICP on "Competency-Based Curriculum Development" in Maldives

An In-Country Program on "Competency-Based Curriculum Development" is being organized by Colombo Plan Staff college for Technician Education (CPSC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, Employment and Social Security, Maldives through the Department of Higher Education and Training at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Male from 17-26 February 2008.
Inaugurating the program, Minister of Higher Education, Employment and Social Security, Maldives Hon Abdul Rasheed Hussain lauded the role of CPSC in improving the quality of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the Maldives. He also thanked the CPSC for conducting this in country program on a highly relevant topic especially in the Maldives context. Honorable Minister said that TVET schools and colleges in Maldives are offering technical and vocational education and skill training. However, it is desirable that the training should be based on needs of the industry and the other world of work. He also expressed the hope that the Ministry of Higher Education, Employment and Social Security, Maldives will work more closely with CPSC in future for joint undertaking of programs, projects and activities for improvement of TVET system in the country.
Honorable Ahmed Ali Maniku, Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Employment and Social Security, Maldives was also present in the opening ceremony, which was also attended by Dr. Hassan Hamid, Rector, Maldives College of Higher Education and Ms. Visaam Ali, Director General, Department of Higher Education and Training, Maldives.
Speaking in the Inauguration ceremony Dr Shyamal Majumdar, Director General, CPSC gave an account of the challenges which the TVET sector is facing in the Asia Pacific Countries and need for the CPSC and the member countries to gear up for facing the challenges. He also emphasized that competency based training system aims at trying to make TVET much more relevant to meeting the needs of industry and user agencies. Training based on Competency based Curriculum (CBC) ensures that the person would possess both knowledge and skill of defined standard corresponding to relevant workplace requirement and reflects the realities of the workplace.
The program's main objective is to facilitate an in-depth understanding and development of skills on the various aspects of CBC amongst Officials form the Ministry of Higher Education, Employment and Social Security and from TVET institutions so that they can ensure that the training being imparted in the institutions is more relevant to the requirements of the industry and the world of work. The objectives of the training program are:
To explain the general concepts of competency-based curriculum
To impart skills amongst the participants for identification of competencies, development of standards and learning package
To formulate an assessment and evaluation procedure for a competency-based program
This program is utilizing both face-to-face and web-based teaching and learning delivery systems to impart the desired knowledge, skills and competencies to the participants. In addition there are Group tasks to encourage and inspire teamwork in the performance of assigned tasks. The program also has Industry/Institutions visits and project work.
The program is being attended by 19 senior officials from the Ministry of Higher Education, Employment and Social Security, Maldives and TVET institutions of Maldives.
Dr Suresh K. Dhameja, Faculty Consultant, CPSC is the Course Coordinator and Resource Person. He is being assisted by Ms. Mariyam Noordeen, Assistant Executive Director, Department of Higher Education and Training, Maldives as the local coordinator. Dr. A.R. Ariyaratne, CPSC Specialist is the Cyber Resource Person.

Self Development Program held

Addu Atoll Women’s Development Initiative has commenced a self development program. According to Addu Atoll Women’s Development the program is targeted at various people working in different areas of Addu atoll.

The 2 day program commenced yesterday at 1400 hours. Addu Women’s Development Initiative says that 30 people are taking in the program. Chairperson of Addu Women’s Development Initiative Shiyara Mohamed Didi said that the objective of the training program is to increase self confidence and to make carrier advancements.

Addu Atoll Women’s Development Initiative is organization committed to the development of Addu.


A Vocational Institution to be established this year: Higher Education

In a print media conference, Assistant Executive Director – Maryam Nooraddeen of Ministry of Higher Education Employment and Social Security had stated that the works of a Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Center could be established this year. Furthermore, she said that it would not be just in name, and therefore trainings of qualified officials are going quite speedily at the moment.

In this bargain, it is said that they would be providing qualified employees to the expanding industrial bases and to the demands of the labor markets. Furthermore, Maryam Nooraddeen stated that the establishment of such a center would make way for the students in the secondary education sector to emerge as a qualified employee.

It is being decided that the students studying in different sectors of education are to be provided with the maximum opportunity to enhance their skills and as well the private sector is welcomed to work in this bargain. Besides, the establishment of a vocational training center and its structural organization was decided last year, by the government.

Ministry of Higher Education Employment and Social Security to form a Vocational Training College by end of 2008.

According to Aafathis News Service Ministry of Higher Education Employment and Social Security will form a Vocational Training College by end of 2008. This College will create additional training opportunities for the youth specially school leavers of grade 10.

Inaugration of Dhiraagu Apprentice Program

Dhiraagu has introduced an Apprentice Program for the work-age youth of the Maldives at a special ceremony held today at Nasandhura Palace Hotel in Male’, Maldives. This special program aims to improve the employability of Maldivian youth and is called “Dhiraagu Apprentice Program”(DAP). DAP is an educational and training program designed to provide the skills and knowledge needed for the specific discipline along which the apprentices are keen to develop a career in the information communication industry. The program provides the individuals with an earning while they learn.

During the official inauguration ceremony this morning, Mr Ismail Rasheed, Dhiraagu Chief Executive, stated that ‘the main objective of this program is to provide an opportunity for the youth of Maldives to obtain a structured training programme that would enable them to have an increased sense of professional competency leading to greater potential for career establishment/advancement and also earn while they learn. He also highlighted that the program is not limited only to Male’ but will be open for candidates across the nation to at the various Dhiraagu regional centres.’

The Chief Guest for the function, Minister of Tourism Dr Mahmoodh Shawgy highlighted that Dhiraagu is one of the highly successful companies in the Maldives that has been continuously investing in the training and development of its people. The Minister thanked the management of Dhiraagu for embarking on such an initiative that benefits the Maldivian community. Followed by the Minister’s speech, Dhiraagu Head of Human Resources - Ms Aminath Nazla made a presentation of DAP highlighting the details of this program. DAP is an ongoing initiative and each Apprentice will be on the program for a one year period, at the successful completion of which the apprentice will be awarded a completion certificate. To further enhance the benefits of the program some apprentices may even be offered an opportunity to complete a second year as an apprentice or additionally be offered a permanent employment with Dhiraagu; this will be subject to availability and performance of the apprentice during the program.

The program will provide apprentices with skills, knowledge and experience they would require to perform the job in their chosen discipline leading to better career opportunities in the future.

DAP will provide generic skills that are important for many jobs across different disciplines for apprentices. These will include skills such as communication, planning and organising, problem solving and decision making. This also comprise customer care and occupational health and safely.

The program aims to build confidence and self esteem in apprentices thereby aiding them to become effective team members at the work place and face the challenges in life. DAP will also help seek apprentices’ desired job – proving them with necessary skills to prepare themselves for employment interviews, researching jobs/vacancies and developing effective CVs.

THE CYPREA SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME

Cyprea Scholarships offers two scholarships annually for two Maldivian students enrolling in two of the faculties of the Maldives College for Higher Education; Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Studies and the Faculty of Management and Computing. Selections are made after the Faculties complete their enrollment each year. The scholarships cover the tuition fees of the selected students.

The program is in the process of expansion by way of providing more opportunities locally or abroad for further higher studies.

Even though recipients of Cyprea Scholarships are not expected to serve the Cyprea Group, they are expected to serve the Maldives after the completion of their studies.

TMA announces scholarship scheme

Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) has revealed that the company has opened scholarship opportunities for interested parties wishing to pursue a carrier in Aviation.

According to Marketing Manager Ahmed Latheef the scholarships are intended to enhance Tourism Industry. Latheef said every year 3 scholarships will be awarded to deserving candidates wishing to undertake a carrier in Aviation related activities.

Speaking at a news conference held at TMA base in Male’ International Airport on the 13 of this month, Latheef said arrangements have already been made for training of 5 pilots and 3 engineers. He further said 2 management courses have also been arranged.

Marketing Manager Latheef also revealed that effective 1 May 2008 the company will commence operation to a second destination. He revealed that Kadehdhoo of Gdh atoll was chosen as their second destination as resorts has been established in Ga, Gdh atoll.

He further revealed that due to high inflation salaries of all TMA staff will be raised by 5 to 15 % soon.

TMA has been in operation for sometime and specializes in air transfer of tourists to various resorts. In this regard TMA is key development partner of Maldives tourism industry.
